From Sawnee Mountain to the Big Creek Greenway, Forsyth is made for adventures and exploring. The hiking trails, bike paths, parks, playgrounds and ideal weather make Forsyth County the perfect place for enjoying the outdoors while staying fit. Our town is also home to outdoor camps, recreational programs, healthy eateries, yoga and fitness studios and indoor play centers for kids making it the ideal town for everyone in the family to get and stay healthy.
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS
Take a leisurely family bike ride or meet your friends here to walk or run. This 12-foot-wide concrete and boardwalk path meanders through the woods along Big Creek and is ideal for biking, jogging and inline skating. We like to bike from the Bethelview entrance over to Fowler Park for some playground time before heading back.

From Caney Creek Preserve to Fowler Park, there are more than 25 parks in Forsyth County waiting to be explored. One of our favorite parks is Cumming City Park, just past downtown Cumming off of Pilgrim Mill Road. There are two amazing playgrounds… one geared towards ages 2-5 for another for ages 5-13. You can park literally steps away and there are more that a dozen covered picnic tables making it the perfect spot for a picnic. Restrooms are conveniently on site too. Unique features include the soft turf ground, wheelchair swings, a spinny wheel you can jump onto and a couple rock climbing walls.
At Fowler Park, the kids will love taking their scooter or skateboard up and down the hills at the skate park. There is also a track, basketball courts and playgrounds to keep kids fit.
Forsyth County has three recreation centers: Central Park (2300 Keith Bridge Road), Fowler Park (4110 Carolene Way) and Old Atlanta Park (810 Nichols Road). A basic pass to the rec center includes open gym basketball, pickle ball, badminton and the walking track. There is also a Cardio-Weight Pass, FitClass Pass and FitPass plus option. There are more than 90 classes each week for all levels and classes include Barre, Cardio, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba and more!
In addition to the offerings at the rec centers, there are a variety of programs offered through Forsyth Parks and Recreation Department for all ages. From special interest classes like Heartsaver First Aid, CPR & AED and Intro to Fly Fishing to community education classes like Women’s Self Defense, and Spring Break Camps and Youth League Sports, there are so many activities offered every season. Sports include basketball, football, cheerleading, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and wrestling. UFA soccer program begins for kids as young as 3 years old who can participate in a mini season. UFA is provides a developmental structure and quality instruction for children ages 3-18. UFA offers various programs within the club, including recreational, academy, select and TOPSoccer. There is also an adult league for people over the age of 18. One of the Cumming soccer fields is Polo Fields so after practice or a game, it’s an easy walk or drive across the street for a family lunch or dinner at Vickery Village.
Kids will learn a mixture of many different martial arts, with a primary focus on westernized boxing and kickboxing. Dojo Dinos program is for ages 3.5-6 and a free trial class is available! Sign up here. Dojo Dragons is geared toward kids ages 6-12. In addition, self defense classes are offered for teens and adults. Dojo, located in Vickery Village, offers transported after school karate, camps, birthday parties and more.
Sawnee Mountain Preserve offers 11 miles of wooded trails for walkers, runners and hikers. This is an ideal spot for a family hike, natural play, enjoying nature and history through interpretive exhibits and other fun adventures! Make your way to the top of the mountain for an incredible view of the North Georgia Mountains and be sure to stop and rest in the Indian Seats. Also check out the Fairy Trail and play area behind the visitors center. Sawnee offers incredible programs for youth, including rock climbing, kayaking on the Etowah River, stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking and summer adventure camps.
Saturday programs include free guided hikes, free family fun crafts, tree climbing, zip lining, AdventureFit outdoor fitness program and more!

Kids in the youth bowling league will enjoy positive feedback from qualified coaches, look forward to the rewards that are given for achievement, and everyone gets playing time! Perfect for a rainy day, this indoor play center/showroom features trampolines and tons of playset equipment to enjoy during open play hours. This is also a great place for a birthday party!
Renovated in 2017, this is another rainy day spot for letting the kids burn off some energy while getting in all the climbing, jumping and running their little hearts desire. There is larger play village, new (and super fast) slides and air cannons that will keep the kids so entertained!! This is another top spot for a birthday party.
Monkey Joe’s is located in the Midway Family Festival shopping center off of Post Road. Kids 12 and younger can enjoy hours of fun with wall-to-wall inflatable jumps, slides and obstacle courses, plus there’s a separate toddler play area – the Mini Monkey Zone – filled with age-appropriate toys to keep little ones safe and secure.
On Mondays, it’s Pay Your Age Mondays. Tuesday is Toddler Tuesday and kids under 4 are only $4 for all day play. On Wednesdays, receive half off admission for Wacky Wednesday. Bring coins for the game area of Monkey Joes and remember socks for the kids! Another top spot for birthday parties!
YMCA Forsyth offers programs for the entire family. With a Y membership, you get free childcare while you’re working out plus reduced rates on Y programs like swimming lessons.

OneLife Fitness Vickery offers amazing classes like Purre Barre and they even have a hot yoga studio! The childcare is $10 for unlimited use for the first child and then $5 for each additional child. There’s a swimming pool, basketball court, functional turf training area, 30-minute workout express, cycle room, a variety of cardio equipment and free weights and so much more.
Lake Sidney Lanier is packed with recreational opportunities. More than 690 miles of shoreline, 100+ small islands and covering more than 37,000 acres, Lake Lanier is perfect for waterskiing, wakeboarding, fishing and more. One of our favorite spots on Lake Lanier is at Mary Alice Park.
Paddle your way through 163 miles of adventure on the beautiful Etowah River which floats through Forsyth County. Maps and helpful resources for planning your trip are on the website. Plan to spend 3-4 hours on the water. This is one of our favorite summertime activities!
My kids have both taken swim lessons here and learned so much. There are two indoor pools – a 25-yard instructional pool and a 50-meter competition pool – open 7 days a week. The classes are small and personalized and they even offer Infant Swim Rescue (ISR) classes here. Open May through September, the outdoor leisure pool is like a mini waterpark with a slide, lazy river and a play structure. The four cabanas and giant umbrellas make this a fun spot for summer birthday parties!
Day Trip – Yoga By the Water at Georgia Aquarium
Break a sweat in Georgia Aquarium’s Oceans Ballroom, offering incredible views of manta rays and whale sharks. Workout by the Water offers yoga, pilates and bootcamp classes led by local fitness instructors. Classes are designed to challenge students of all experience levels. Each class is just $10 and takes place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the dates listed below. All proceeds from Workout by the Water benefit Georgia Aquarium’s research and conservation initiatives.
